Turn it off and call. Do not run it again to check whether the smell comes back.

Does living near the coast affect my air conditioner?
Yes, noticeably. Salt in the air corrodes outdoor coil fins, fasteners and fan motors, and units within a few streets of the water can lose years off their life without maintenance. A rinse of the outdoor coil with fresh water every few months helps a lot. When we attend we will tell you honestly whether corrosion is the actual fault or just cosmetic.
What should I do while I wait for the technician?
Switch it off at the wall if it is smoking, sparking or leaking. Do not keep resetting a tripped breaker. Catch water with towels and a bucket and move electronics away. In humid weather run fans and a dehumidifier if you have one, and keep blinds closed on the sunny side. Have brand, model and error code ready.
